| The book records the architecture of the shipyard in Gdańsk and the vestiges of the workers’ Solidarity movement. From 2000 onwards, the fact that Szlaga had a studio in the grounds of the shipyard meant that he could systematically document it; the ageing interior, the architecture either collapsing into ruins or demolished and the vanishing traces of the Solidarity movement and the people who changed the course of Polish and European history. The book presents not only the most iconic spots, such as the Occupational Health and Safety Hall and the gates to the shipyard, but also a sweeping picture of the vast shipyard. |

Książka dokumentuje materialną entropię i upadek politycznej legendy Stoczni Gdańskiej, gdzie narodził się ruch Solidarności. Korzystając z wynajmowanej na terenie stoczni pracowni, Szlaga od 2000 roku systematycznie fotografował starzejące się wnętrza, popadającą w ruinę lub wyburzaną architekturę, zanikanie śladów po ruchu robotniczym i ludziach Solidarności. Książka, utrzymana w konwencji dokumentu topograficznego, przedstawia ikoniczne miejsca, jak sala BHP, czy brama stoczniowa, bramę, ale też obszerną dokumentację ogromnego obszaru Stoczni. |

Michał Szlaga was born in Gdańsk in 1978. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in his home city and is now a lecturer there. Szlaga specialises in documentary photography and portraiture and makes videos sporadically. He collaborates with a number of magazines, including “Przekrój” (Cross-Section), a weekly, “Male Men”, a quarterly, “K-Mag”, an online publication and “Playboy”.
