| The photographs published in the album are fascinating in their wealth of detail and their entry into the world of people living in Poland’s villages, towns and cities. Shots of the interiors of peasants’ cottages appear next to those of flats where the intelligentsia live. What unites them is the fact that, in all of them, an image of Pope John Paull II appears in the background. The selection of photos for the book, which was made from Rydet’s “Zapis socjologiczny” series, reveals an interesting and, in the face of tired interpretations, rather surprising aspect of her engagement in socio-political life and its devotional sensibility. The book was published to mark the tenth anniversary of the ‘Polish pope’s’ pontificate. |

Fotografie opublikowane w “Obecności” fascynują ilością detali i wejściem w intymny świat mieszkańców polskich wsi, miast i miasteczek. Zdjęcia wnętrz chłopskich chat sąsiadują z ujęciami mieszkań inteligenckich. Wszystkie je łączy pojawiający się w tle wizerunek Jana Pawła II. Poczyniony do tej książki wybór z “Zapisu socjologicznego” ujawnia ciekawy, nieco zaskakujący wobec utartych interpretacji, aspekt zaangażowania autorki w bieżące życie społeczno-polityczne i jej dewocyjną wrażliwość. Książka została wydana z okazji dziesięciolecia pontyfikatu papieża Polaka. |

| Zofia Rydet was born in 1911 in the city of Stanisławów, now Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine, and she died in Gliwice in southern Poland in 1997.One of the most individual personalities in mid-twentieth-century Polish art, she was part of fine art photography circles throughout her life and an activist in photographic societies and unions, including the Gliwickie Towarzystwo Fotograficzne and the Związek Polskich Artystów Fotografików (Gliwice Photography Society and Union of Polish Art Photographers, respectively). |

Zofia Rydet (ur. 1911, Stanisławów [ob. Iwano-Frankiwsk] – zm. 1997, Gliwice) – jedna z najbardziej wyjątkowych osobowości polskiej sztuki II połowy XX wieku, przez całe twórcze życie związana z środowiskiem fotografii artystycznej, działaczka towarzystw i związków fotograficznych (m.in. Gliwickie Towarzystwo Fotograficzne, ZPAF). Autorka cykli dokumentalnych w duchu fotografii humanistycznej (m.in. Mały człowiek), fotomontaży (Świat uczuć i wyobraźni) oraz monumentalnego Zapisu socjologicznego – empatycznego portretu polskiego społeczeństwa u schyłku komunizmu. |
