Hartwig’s cosmopolitan artistic manifesto was the first of its kind and the most influential Polish photobook of the second half of the twentieth century. The book makes symbolic allusion, via its title, to pioneering photographer Jan Bułhak’s artistic photography programme and expands it in the direction of innovative formal solutions, with the primacy of visual quality over documentary, in a manner characteristic of the subjective photographic trend in the nineteen fifties.

Książka nawiazująca symbolicznie – poprzez tytuł – do programu fotografii artystycznej Jana Bułhaka i rozwijająca go w kierunku nowatorskich rozwiązań formalnych, prymatu jakości wizualnych nad dokumentalnymi, w sposób charaktrystyczny dla nurtu fotografii subiektywnej lat 1950.

Edward Hartwig was born in Moscow in 1909 and he died in Warsaw in 2003. The most important creator of artistic photography in the second half of the twentieth century, he was a co-founder of the Związek Polskich Artystów Fotografików (Union of Polish Art Photographers) and one of its activists. He was the author of several dozen photographic albums and an artistic photographer whose work encompassed a wide array of genres and a broad formal spectrum, ranging from travel, portrait and theatrical photography to photomontage and experimental, intensely rasterised studies verging on the abstract.

Edward Hartwig (ur. 1909, Moskwa – zm. 2003, Warszawa) – najważniejszy polski twórca fotografii artystycznej w II poł. XX wieku, współzałożyciel i działacz ZPAF, autor kilkudziesięciu albumów fotograficznych, fotografik o szerokim spektrum gatunkowym i formalnym: od fotografii krajoznawczej, portretowej i teatralnej po fotomontaże i eksprymentalne, silnie grafizowane studia z pogranicza abstrakcji.
