| The album contains two series of black-and-white, staged portraits dating from between 2005 and 2012 in eastern Poland, in the region of Pańczuk’s birthplace. Most were taken in the village of Lubenka, although other nearby villages also feature. The series entitled “Aktorzy” (Actors) depicts members of the Czeladońka ritual theatre group. The second series of portraits, “Karczeby”, takes its title from a local dialect word, karczeb, which describes a tree stump with roots plunged deep into the earth and very difficult to remove. The word is also used about local people with profound ties to the land. The eponymous Karczeby are local men and women of mature and venerable years. The book is rounded off with a text by Kazimierz Kusznierow, the founder of Czeladońka. |

Fotografie opublikowane w książce zostały wykonane w latach 2005-2012 w rodzinnych okolicach fotografa w położonej na Polesiu, w południowo-wschodniej Polsce Lubence oraz okolicznych wsiach. Karczeb w lokalnym dialekcie to głęboko wrośnięty w ziemię i trudny do wyrwania korzeń. Publikacja Pańczuka składa się z dwóch cykli inscenizowanych portretów “Karczeby” oraz “Aktorzy”, które przedstawiają lokalnych mieszkańców, rolników oraz aktorów-amatorów miejscowego teatru obrzędowego Czeladońka, założonego przez Kazimierza Kusznierowa, którego tekst uzupełnia album. |

| Fifty copies were brought out as a collector’s edition. The jury of the 2013 Pictures of the Year International Photography competition named “Karczeby” Book of the Year and it also won prizes in the Magnum Expression Award and the Sony World Photography Award competitions. Before the book was published, a number of awards went to individual photos and excerpts from the series. |

| Adam Pańczuk was born in the eastern town of Biała Podlaska. A photographer specialising in documentation, portraiture and photojournalism, he graduated from the Poznań University of Economics and Business and the University of the Arts Poznan [sic]. He is a member of the Sputnik Photos international collective of East-Central European photographers and he collaborates with a number of newspapers and magazines, including “National Geographic”, “Newsweek” and “Polityka” (Politics), a Polish weekly magazine. |

Członek kolektywu Sputnik Photos. Współpracował z gazetami i magazynami m.in. „National Geographic”, „Newsweek”, „Dziennik”, „Polityka”. |
