The project of Alessandra Svatek (1979) – a painter who cannot bring herself to use colors, takes the form of a symbolic journey in the sense of visual introspection. Her main reason is the effort to achieve the ideal state, which for her is freedom. The basic means of liberation is first of all understanding the principles shaping the world and functioning within them – or perhaps – rather outside their framework. Although she looks back through her spatial installation, her focus is not on memories, but on her own overcome beliefs, which she gradually tests on herself over the years. She gives old theories a metaphorical form based on a certain kind of minimalist elusiveness, physically often associated with layers of dust, or on the contrary, transparency. Of course, this non-literalism multiplied by the filters of “new errors” can naturally become the origin of further misunderstandings, and the whole cycle can thus repeat itself just one more turn of the “no/knowledge” spiral. The fact that such a process may not lead to an absolute solution does not mean that it does not make sense.
Alessandra Svatek’s visual language oscillates between painting, object and architecture. It is emotionally accelerated by symbolism based on personal mythology, often already based on material scope. The introverted content is balanced by a thoughtful installation where there is not much room for chance. Although her whole may not be entirely easy to grasp at first glance, the particulars are mostly what they are, and it is possible to perceive them directly. Dirt remains dirt, a view a view, an impassable wall an obstacle. From this point of view, her form is meaningful, and based on the synthesis of successive readings, a complex image can be formed, which becomes a starting point for further considerations. At the same time, it corresponds to the fact that Alessandra Svatek’s work is closely connected with the way she thinks. It is a concrete thinking about abstract things, while the realization itself is “just” a by-product of some journey. In this case, it is perhaps the most escapist game from the disturbed reality of everyday life.
