[EN/PL] ‘Facade’ by Monika Sosnowska at Galeria Labirynt

Façade is a one and a half ton replica of the curtain facade of a Modernist building from the 1960s (the current seat of the Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw), subjected by the artist to three months of brutal operations: twisting, crushing, stretching. The precisely planned process of “inflicting violence” on the steel structure involved engineers and workers as well as construction machinery that usually serves the needs of building, and not destruction. These persistent destructive actions transformed a rectangular geometric figure of 8 x 10 metres in size with rhythmical divisions into an organic form with a dramatically twisted shape, unusable and deprived of its original function. Suspended from the ceiling, it resembles a giant crown twisted with a single movement by a mighty giant on a sudden whim. The curtain façade was non-structural, it merely functioned as an outer covering and a decorative element. It was therefore “punished” for its superficiality – for imitating a solid structure that inspires trust. Seen from today’s perspective, Façade reveals itself as a metaphor for the crisis whose culmination and ultimate end was accelerated by the pandemic. Monika Sosnowska’s sculpture became an anti-monument of modernity, which can no longer be kept on artificial life support.

Façade is the artist’s first exhibition in Lublin and the first presentation of the piece in Poland. The work has so far been shown at the exhibitions: Regional Modernities at the ACCA, Melbourne (2013), Architectonisation at The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (2015), and at the Sharjah Biennial 13, Dubai (2017).

The exhibition opening for viewers was preceded by performative actions by Mikołaj Karczewski, Beata Mysiak and Anna Żak together with the Lublin Dance Theatre. The performers engaged their bodies in a dialogue with Sosnowska’s monumental sculpture.

„Fasada” Moniki Sosnowskiej jest ważącą około półtorej tony repliką kurtynowej fasady modernistycznego budynku z lat 60 (będącego siedzibą FGF). którą artystka poddała trwającym 3 miesiące brutalnym operacjom; skręcaniu, zgniataniu, naciąganiu. W tym dokładnie zaplanowanym procesie „przemocy” wobec stalowej konstrukcji brali udział inżynierowie i robotnicy, używane były maszyny budowlane służące zazwyczaj do konstruowania, nie destruowania. W wyniku tych konsekwentnych, niszczycielskich działań regularny geometryczny prostokąt o wymiarach 8×10 m z geometrycznymi, rytmicznymi podziałami, przeistoczył się w organiczną formę o dramatycznie skręconym kształcie, nieużyteczną, pozbawioną pierwotnej funkcji. Zwisając spod sufitu, przypomina ogromną koronkę, którą obdarzony potężną siłą gigant skręcił jednym ruchem pod wpływem nagłego kaprysu. Kurtynowa fasada nie miała funkcji konstrukcyjnej stanowiła jedynie funkcję osłonową i reprezentacyjną budynków. Została, więc „ukarana” za swą fasadowość, za udawanie solidnej budzącej zaufanie konstrukcji.  Patrząc na „Fasadę” z obecnej perspektywy widzę w niej metaforę kryzysu, którego kulminację i ostateczny kres przyspieszyła pandemia. Rzeźba Moniki Sosnowskiej stała się antypomnikiem nowoczesności, której nie da się już dłużej sztucznie podtrzymywać przy życiu.

Fasada to pierwsza wystawa artystki w Lublinie i jednocześnie pierwsza prezentacja tej pracy w Polsce. Wystawiana była dotychczas na wystawach: Regional Modernities w ACCA, Melbourne (2013), Architectonisation w The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (2015), podczas Sharjah Biennale 13, Dubaj (2017).

Otwarcie wystawy dla publiczności poprzedziły działania performatywne Mikołaja Karczewskiego, Beaty Mysiak i Anny Żak – tancerzy związanych z Lubelskim Teatrem Tańca. Performerzy wykorzystali swoje ciała do podjęcia dialogu z monumentalną rzeźbą Sosnowskiej.
